Weinviertel DAC -The Weinviertel Setting New Standards

For lovers of classical Grüner Veltliner this year is the beginning of a new era. As of 1 March 2003, Weinviertel wines are on sale with the Weinviertel DAC (Weinviertel Districtus Austriae Controllatus) will be on sale, made exclusively from Grüner Veltliner, the Austrian varietal, and only from grapes originating in the Weinviertel. The wines bearing this label meet very strict criteria and have been tested several times, before being allowed to be sold as Weinviertel DAC.

Controls Secure Unique Taste

The criteria for Weinviertel DAC wines are clear: a light to greenish yellow colour, a typical nose without wood notes (i.e. vinification in barrique) and without alcoholic tones dominating the aroma. At least 12% alcohol, however, are required. An analytical examination and a blind tasting by a special tasting commission guarantee that all DAC wines are conform to these criteria.

Transparency Creates Security

The Weinviertel DAC designates an absolutely unique wine style and will facilitate the choice for wine lovers, who are able to connect a clear character to the wines labelled with the Weinviertel DAC label. Only these wines will be allowed to carry the designation Weinviertel DAC, and possible the vineyard name. All other quality wines from this area will be marked as of 2003 with "Niederösterreich". Apart from this, nothing will change. The multiplicity of grape varietals and the individual wine styles of Weinviertel wines will continue to flourish.

The Weinviertel Paves the Way

The new Weinviertel DAC wine was made possible by a new government decree. Other Austrian wine growing areas are equally invited to decide on criteria for their own DAC wines. The Weinviertel was the first to meet the wishes of wine lovers at home and abroad. In doing so, the Weinviertel producers are going a way towards a new understanding of Austrian wines. Others will follow.
